Coast Salish Gathering

During the last week of September I documented the 2010 Coast Salish Gathering. This year it was hosted by the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community and provided an opportunity for tribal elders and government officials from around the region to gather and discuss the challenges and opportunities of co-resource management. Over the three days the conversation traversed from the white capped peaks of the Cascade range to the white caps of the Salish Sea. Particularly striking were the differences in legal standing of the Canadian First Nations vs. our U.S. tribes, thanks in large part to the Bolt Decision.
I spent my time on the floor of the Northern Lights Casino, making about 120 portraits of every speaker who contributed to the discussion. The images were then projected on the walls during the gathering and posted to the web each night.
