National Teach-in at Pacific University

On February 5th we presented for the National Teach-in on Global Warming at Pacific University. (A year ago we participated in the University of Washington’s Focus the Nation events; this year’s Teach-in is an off-shoot from Focus the Nation.) Located in Forest Grove, Oregon, Pacific University is a fairly small school, so we were thrilled when around 75 students and community members showed up, and we enjoyed the lively discussion after our talk.

The next day one student wrote:

“Your projects have inspired me to put my love of people and photographic skills into helping with the climate crisis. I asked the question, what difference the two of you saw between Americans and the people you visited with in being so understanding about the environment. The answer you both gave has not left my mind since.”

We often joke that our work, along with many other projects and conservation organizations, is faith-based. It’s touching to hear that, at least for someone, it did make a difference. Thanks to Deke Gunderson, associate professor of environmental studies, for inviting us down for the evening!

The following monday we visited Dan Lamont’s Documentary Methods class at Photo Center Northwest. We hauled in our speakers, shared our multimedia work with his students and discussed what it’s like to work on a long-term documentary piece. It was nice to reconnect with Dan and see some of the great work his students have been doing.
