Oceans Are Our Business

Stories on ocean acidification from coastal communities

Ocean Conservancy
2015-2017

As ocean acidification changes the chemistry of our oceans, coastal communities need science, answers and solutions. The two films in this series feature scientists and business owners who are concerned about the future of Dungeness crab and coral reefs. “We've kind of developed our societies and our ecological systems with the marine ecology as it is right now,” says NOAA ecologist Paul McElhany. “So any kind of profound shift in that is going to have big economic and cultural impacts.”

Ocean Conservancy is using these films to help engage leaders within threatened industries and encourage policy makers to make further research on ocean acidification a top priority. Both films premiered at congressional briefings on Capitol Hill, and Republican Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen referenced Deeply Invested when she spoke on the House Floor about the impact of acidification on her Miami district. In addition to the films, we also created an image library that Ocean Conservancy can use to help protect the ocean from today’s greatest global challenges.
